CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — GOOOOAAAALLLLLL ….. was shouted three times Oct. 7 in the true nature of a Spanish broadcast of soccer. Only this time, it wasn’t famous commentator Andrés Cantor but Campbellsville University broadcasting student Jose Martini of Venezuela calling a 3-0 CU victory over West Virginia Tech.
Martini served as play-by-play commentator in Campbellsville University’s first-ever Spanish broadcast of a collegiate soccer match on Campbellsville University’s WLCU 88.7 FM. He was joined by former Tiger soccer player Keiber Angulo of Venezuela and Sergio Poveda of Ecuador. Reports came in of listeners via WLCUfm.com from Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Brazil and even Scotland, Miami, Fla., and Dallas, Texas.
“(Sophomore defender) John Kennedy’s mom was following the broadcast (in Scotland), and she said she does not speak Spanish but it was fun,” Martini said. “Many people said that we did a great job and they were proud ofKeiber and me. We were told not everybody would do what we did.”
It was the first live play-by-play broadcast for Martini and first broadcast for Angulo.
Campbellsville University’s Spanish department, mass communications department and athletic department teamed up with WLCU 88.7 FM for the special Spanish broadcast. There were occasional updates in English.
“The broadcast in Spanish is an exciting step for Tiger athletics and for our soccer program. As Campbellsville University continues to grow in size and in the diversity of the students, faculty and staff, we are experiencing the world coming to our campus and community. Additionally, there is an increasing number of Spanish-speaking residents in the service area of CU and our WLCU-FM radio station,” said Dr. Michael V. Carter, president of Campbellsville University. “We are very thankful to have this opportunity to broadcast this match in Spanish and trust that it will be beneficial to our campus and community at large.”
During halftime of the game, a prerecorded interview played of graduate student Maria Gomez of Spain with Carter. It was also translated into Spanish.Susie Gaona of Lebanon, Ky., joined the others to help record promos for the broadcast. All students worked closely with Spanish professor Dr. Johana Perez-Weisenberger and mass communications professors Dr. Russ Barclay, Jeannie Clark and Dr. Keith Spears for the broadcast.
“I am happy to be a part of the first soccer game broadcast in Spanish. I believe this broadcast will bring Campbellsville University closer to our Hispanic community and Hispanic students,” Perez-Weisenberger said.
