CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University Fighting Tiger football team will team up with Greenville College, their opponent for Saturday’s Victory Bowl game, to serve the local community Friday, Nov. 18.
The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl is played between two Christian colleges, picked from a field of 16 teams that make up the NCCAA. This will be the second straight year that Campbellsville has played in this game; losing to North Greenville University 42-16 last season. Campbellsville looks to improve to 7-5 on the year with a win Saturday against Greenville College.
Each NCCAA postseason event has a Christian Service Project for all teams to participate in. Coaches and players from both Campbellsville University and Greenville College will team up to serve the community Friday, Nov. 18.
Plans are set for 12 “teams” to meet with surrounding elementary and middle schools to read to students, deliver talks about character and talk to them about playing sports with a Christian attitude. Teams will also volunteer service at the Taylor County Crisis Relief Center and Food Pantry, The Healing Place, and Bluegrass Assisted Living.
The focus of the NCCAA for the 2011-2012 athletic year is “Game Plan 4 Love,” with emphasis on 1 Corinthians 13. The NCCAA strives for student-athletes to display Excellence, Love, Integrity and Faith.
“For the Victory Bowl Christian Service Projects, the purpose is for the two teams to come together to exhibit the qualities and characteristics set by the NCCAA,” said Jim Hardy, CU assistant football coach. “Not only exhibiting these traits on the football field, but out in the community as well. All the players will have their jerseys on so the community can establish who we are, a team. This is a great opportunity for our guys to go out in the community, work together with guys they don’t know for two hours and do something good.”
Hardy is in charge of all service projects and community involvement for the Campbellsville University football team.
This is only the second time that Campbellsville has hosted a home post-season game in school history, having hosted a 2001 NAIA playoffs first round game. The Tigers will host Greenville College Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at HIG Field in Finley Stadium, 204 Tiger Way, Campbellsville.
