CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY COMPLETES ANOTHER SUMMER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE PROGRAM
By Christina Miller, student news writer
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University recently gave 13 students, from Kentucky and other states, the experience of getting a head start on their college career.
Thirteen students participated in the Summer Education Experience (SEE) recently where they were given the opportunity to grow academically and socially, according to Kevin Propes, director of the Center for Introductory Studies.
The program is “an intense preparation program for the fall semester,” Propes said. Students spent time studying English, math and university success skills.
“Students go to classes five days a week, and the classes are designed as an intense review of basic skills to prepare the students better for the fall semester,” Propes said.
Classes for the SEE program are taught by adjunct faculty.
Ron Rafferty, an adjunct faculty member who teaches during the summer program, said, “The program gives students a head start and gets them familiar with campus. It can make the difference between attending college or not.”
Propes said, “It is an important program for these students because it helps them to be much better prepared for college-level work in the fall. Also, these students have the opportunity to possibly test out of some of their required coursework for the fall semester.”
The students live just like they would during a normal semester. They eat in the dining hall and live in residence hall rooms. Students also have social activities planned for the evenings and weekends.
Originally, 15 students were chosen from a beginning list of approximately 200 students, which was narrowed down to 40 and then to the 15. Two students were unable to make the trip, which narrowed the group to 13.
The students who were winners of the scholarship to attend SEE are: Jarrell Bankhead of Atlanta, Ga.; Kristin Cameron of Knoxville, Tenn.; Nick Copass of Glasgow, Ky.; Sky Cosby of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; Caleb Croney of Hopkinsville, Ky.; Zac Dawson of Danville, Ky.;
Matt Macon of Bedford, Ky.; Lauren Nolte of Nashville, Tenn.; Malcolm Reece of Ft. Knox, Ky.; Matt Sisk of Lexington, Ky.; Chelsey Walters of Monticello, Ky.; Brooke Waters of Horse Cave, Ky.; and Donald White of Campbellsville.
Originally, the SEE program was started through the Van Lunen Foundation in 2003 as an opportunity for students to get a head start on college. The program is free for students.
