CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.— “You don’t have to do it, no one is making you, and that is what is nice about it,” Dr. Eric Wake, professor and history department chair from the University of the Cumberlands, said referring to Phi Alpha Theta, national history honor society, at Campbellsville University’s first induction ceremony. “When you decide to do it, you’re stepping out.”

Thirteen students were inducted into Campbellsville University’s first Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, national history honor society, in the ceremony held Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Wake spoke at Campbellsville University’s induction ceremony on behalf of the national history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta. “We are proud to include you among us,” he said.

Wake said the society is student-focused. “We want you to do what you want to do. Make the activities yours—make it a part of you,” he said.

In working hard, Wake said you “get up,” “work at it,” and “practice.”

“Sometimes you blow it, but you smile and get back up,” he said.

Wake has taken his Phi Alpha Theta students from the University of the Cumberlands to regional conventions to present papers, and some have attended the national convention as well. He encouraged Campbellsville University students to present their papers when the opportunity arises.

Campbellsville University’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta is one of two new chapters in the Commonwealth of Kentucky this year. The other is Bellarmine University.

Dr. Wendy Benningfield, associate professor of history, serves as faculty advisor for Campbellsville University’s Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.
