CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University will be celebrating Earth Day at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 18 by planting trees at the little log house, located at 503 N. Columbia Ave, Campbellsville, on the corner of University Drive across from the Office of Financial Aid.
The public is invited to the event.
John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations, and his wife, Cathy Pence Chowning, have provided serviceberry trees to be planted by students and members of the community.
“Once again Campbellsville University will pause to symbolically raise the banner of the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainability,” Chowning said of the Earth Day event.
“The planting of trees and flowers, led by four members of our current freshman class, is a reminder of those simple acts of service that promote earth stewardship.
“CU students, as well as the entire campus community, are increasingly aware of the importance of being good stewards of God’s creation.”
Tony Young, mayor of Campbellsville, and Eddie Rogers, Taylor County judge/executive, will be reading a proclamation at the event. Young and Rogers will also be helping with the planting of trees and flowers.
Two Campbellsville freshmen, Steven Yospur of Friendswood, Texas, and Mailey Young of Bowling Green, Ky., will be giving a welcome and invocation. Yospur and Young are Freshman Year Experience student leaders who helped to organize this event.
Tanner Scott of Portland, Ore., and Alyssa Barker of Frankfort, Ky., both freshmen who also helped in the planning of the event, will help plant the trees and flowers, along with Amy Etherington of Versailles, Ky., Freshman Year Experience mentor and senior at CU, and Brenda Tungate, associate professor of biology.
