CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.— The Church Relations Council of Campbellsville University approved a fundraising goal of $5,000 at its fall meeting for purposes of supporting Campbellsville University’s new Christian radio station, WLCU 88.7 FM.
Saloma Baptist Church, one of the local Baptist churches that has long been supportive of CU, presented a check for $250 for the initial amount to provide sponsorship for WLCU 88.7 FM programming, making Saloma Baptist Church WLCU’s first sponsor. The church plans to provide more assistance toward the $5,000 goal.
The Rev. John Chowning, pastor of Saloma Baptist Church, said, “Saloma Baptist Church is honored to be the first donor in support of the new WLCU-FM radio at Campbellsville University and to be the first programming sponsor of Christian broadcasting at WLCU.”
Chowning also serves as vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president.
“The radio station is providing quality Christian music, news and programs for a region of South Central Kentucky and providing CU students with a laboratory for learning Christian broadcasting. We are thankful to have this opportunity to provide this first of additional planned donations in support of WLCU as well as our ongoing support of CU’s overall Christian higher education mission.”
These funds will be used to help with costs of WLCU-FM becoming an affiliate of a national Christian radio network, for costs of technology and equipment related to that affiliation and in support of helping to train the next generation of Christian radio broadcasters.
The Church Relations Council will be recognized on the air as a supporter of the Christian broadcasting mission of WLCU-FM.
Efforts to raise the $5,000 will take place over the next year.
Saloma Baptist Church has provided support for Campbellsville University for a number of funds including budgeted donations annually to the CU Scholarship Fund and support of the Ransdell Chapel through donations for several chapel seats, a Wall of Faith Biblical Scene and most recently made a pledge for the current fundraising capital campaign toward the Ransdell Chapel Walk of Honor for the chapel endowment fund.
Jason England, associate pastor of Saloma Baptist and student minister, is a 2004 graduate of Campbellsville University and serves as assistant director of alumni relations at CU. Jonathan McCoy, minister of music and worship, is a CU pastoral ministries student. Helen Henderson serves as the CRC secretary and has long served as clerk of Saloma Baptist Church.
Saloma Baptist Church has employed a number of CU students as ministry staff during its 60 years of ministry and has other CU employees and students as members.
