CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — For almost a quarter of a century, the lot in front of Montgomery Library on Campbellsville University’s campus has transformed into a car showcase featuring classic and new cars and even motorcycles to kick off Homecoming Day festivities. This year is no exception.
Campbellsville University will hold her 24th Annual Car Cruise on Homecoming Day, Saturday, Oct. 15. The event started small with only a few participants, but has grown to as many as 150 vehicles.
This is a university-sponsored event that is open to anyone who would like to enter. Students are strongly encouraged to enter their vehicles as well as any parents, alumni, faculty and community members. All vehicles are welcome. There is no fee for entry. Registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
There will be 75 orange 1/24 scale 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge diecasts to be given away to participants as prizes. If there are more than 75 participants, the diecasts will be given away through a random drawing as well as some other prizes that have been donated.
Those who also participate in the Homecoming parade and cruise will be entered into a drawing for $100.
This is the 11th year for the diecasts. This year’s model will feature the Homecoming theme on the driver-side door and Campbellsville University logo on the passenger side as well as the date and the number 11 to represent that it is the 11th in the series.
Coordinator Stan McKinney, associate professor of journalism and lead professor for mass communication at Campbellsville University, would like to highly encourage all students to enter their vehicles no matter the make, model, condition or year.
This event is designed so that students and alumni can see vehicles that would have been on campus while they were attending the university, including those currently here.
McKinney said, “We want everyone to come out and have a good time and swap stories. Everyone has a story about their car, believe me.”
He hopes to be able to showcase his own classic 1949 Ford F1 truck that originally belonged to his father in this year’s cruise.
To anyone thinking of entering, he said, “This cruise is for everybody. If you have a car, bring it out. Everybody will want to see it. Just come talk about it. Just talk to other people about their cars. Don’t worry about it if it’s not perfect. That’s not what this is about. Just bring your rides out and show them and have a good time.”
He wants the community to know that it is open to all vehicles, motorcycles included.
