CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Chuck Vaughn, a former Campbellsville Independent Schools superintendent, is this year’s Campbellsville High School inductee into the 5th Region Athletic Director’s Hall of Fame.
The CHS athletics department made the announcement on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
Vaughn is a Campbellsville native and a 1964 graduate of Campbellsville High School.
He was a standout athlete at CHS, earning multiple letters in four sports, including football, basketball, baseball and track.
After graduating, Vaughn received a full scholarship to play football at the University of Kentucky. But after two and a half years, an injury ended his football playing days.
He graduated from UK in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in education.
Vaughn taught math for a year at CHS before he was unexpectedly drafted to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
After two years of military service, Vaughn taught high school in Michigan for five years and worked part-time as a church youth minister.
Vaughn completed a master’s degree in counseling at Western Michigan University in 1975.
He spent the next 15 years in Oregon as a high school teacher, counselor, assistant principal and the last five years as a high school principal.
While in Oregon, Vaughn completed a certification program in public school administration at Portland State University.
In 1990, he returned to Kentucky to become principal at CHS.
While principal, he completed his Kentucky school superintendent certification at Western Kentucky University, and, in 1997, was named superintendent at Campbellsville Independent Schools.
Vaughn was always an ardent supporter of the District’s athletic programs. Under his leadership, a number of athletic facilities were upgraded or completed.
After 34 years in public school education, Vaughn retired in 2005 and accepted a position at Campbellsville University as the Big Maroon Club director. His primary responsibility was raising money to support the athletic department.
Today, he continues to work raising scholarship money for CU students with financial need.
Vaughn and his wife, Karen, who is also a CHS graduate, have three adult children, including Bryan and his wife, Myra; Beth and her husband, Graham; and Ben. They also have a grandson, Will.
CHS will recognize Vaughn at halftime of the CHS boys’ varsity basketball game vs. Metcalfe County on Saturday, Feb. 4. The game will start at about 6 p.m. in the CHS gym.
A reception for Vaughn will be hosted in the CHS College and Career Center, which is across from the cafeteria, after the boys’ varsity match up.
